During my exchange year in U.S.A with my American family and friends, I've noticed there are 3 biggest holiday in United States of America
Special Holidays
(아직 작성중 이었는데 어떤 분이 같은 주제로 저보다 먼저 올리셨네요)
이번 스토리는 미국의 holiday! 입니다. 우리나라의 추석과 설날, 단오와 같이 미국도 큰 명절들이 있는데요, 그 중에서 가장 큰 세 가지의 명절을 소개할게요!
1. Halloween (할로윈)
2. Thanksgiving(추수감사절)
3. Christmas(크리스마스)
Start with Halloween! Holloween is probably American kids' favorite holiday! It is the last day of October which is 10/31. As you all know, Halloween is the day when Americans dress up and go trick or treat.
할로윈부터 시작하자면, 할로윈은 아마도 미국 아이들의 최고의 명절일 거에요. 10월의 끝자락인 10/31일이 바로 할로윈이랍니다. 여러분도 다 아시듯이 특정 복장을 정해 입고, 이웃집에 Treak or Treat라고 말하고 다닌답니다.
We start with carving the pumpkins as you can see on the left. You can either buy a fake pumpkin that's already carved like the one on the farthest left, or buy pumpkins and carv it yourselves! The pumpkin in the middle is the pumpkin I carved and the pumpkin on the right side is the pumkin my (host) sister carved.
Some also decorate their houses and their yards. The picture on the right is the picture I saw from someone's yard.
먼저, 호박 안을 긁어내는 것부터 시작하죠. 상점에 가서 안에 전구가 들어있는 모형호박을 살 수 도 있고, 호박을 사서, 안을 깨끗하게 파낸 다음, 양초를 넣으면 위의 사진같이 빛나요. 가장 왼쪽에 있는 호박이 가짜호박이고, 가운데 호박은 제가 만들었어요! 오른쪽에 있는 호박은 제 호스트 동생이 만들었어요.
어떤 사람들은 자기 집 마당을 꾸미기도 하는데, 오른쪽 사진은 이웃동네를 지나가다가 찍었어요.
They are sooooo realistic! These are the people in king's dominion which is an amusement park I went with our exchange student group. I'll mention about exchange students other times.
분장이 정말 진짜 같지 않나요? 이 사진들은 할로윈 시즌에 king's dominion이라는 놀이공원에 가서 찍었는데 낮에는 놀이공원인데, 어두워지면서 이렇게 분장하고 돌아다니는 사람들이 많더라고요.

친구갘ㅋㅋ 그리스 신화를 흉내내는 사진인데, 그럴듯하지 않나요?
You dress up with costumes and go for trick-or-treat! We knock on neighbor's door and say trick-or-treat and they give out candies.
Well, in my case, we were a little bit too old to go for trick-or-treat, but we did it anyway. American friends gathered around and we dressed up with each different costume.

이렇게 각자 특정한 옷을 입고, 이웃집을 돌아다니며 Treak-or Treat라고 외치면서 사탕을 받아요. 제 나이쯤 되면, Treak-or-Treat하기에는 나이가 많다면서 안하는 친구들이 많치만, 그래도 이렇게 옷을 갖춰입고 나섰어요 
Thanksgiving(추수감사절)
Thanksgiving stands as Chuseok(추석) in Korea. Different with Chuseok (which is celebrated depending on the lunar calender and mostly held in late September or October), Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It is a big, big holiday. All the family members that live apart from each other gather around. Thanksgiving started out with religious and cultural traditions. It was origin from early years of foundation of America. Though late November is slightly late after harvest, it had the purpose of thankful to God and thankful to Indians and themselves for sticking out after all those hard times.
미국의 추수감사절은 한국의 추석인 셈이에요. 추석은 음력으로 따져서 대부분 9월 말이나 10월인 경우가 대부분이지만, 추수감사절은 11월의 4번째 목요일이에요. 정말 큰 명절이죠. 여기저기 떨어져 살고 있는 가족들이 한 곳으로 모이는 대표적인 날이에요. 원래 추수감사절은 종교적, 문화적인 의미에서 시작되었어요. 미국의 설립과정에서 기원했죠. 추수감사절은 정말 추수를 하는 시기보다는 살짝 늦지만, 자신들을 지켜주신 하나님께 감사, 자신들을 도와준 인디언들에게 감사, 그리고 힘든 시기를 버텨낸 자신들에게 축하하는 의미를 지니고 있어요.
What do Americans eat? Of course, turkey! It is same as we eat songpeon.(송편)
추수감사절에 미국인들이 먹는 음식은 당연히 칠면조 요리죠! 두말하면 잔소리죠ㅋㅋㅋ
우리가 추석에 송편을 먹는 것과 같답니다.

Besides turkey, it is common for Americans to eat pumpkin pie.
칠면조만큼이나 추수감사절에 당연시하게 먹는 것은, 호박파이에요.
Black Friday!! 보통 Black Friday 하면 영화인가? 하더라구요.
Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, time to go Christmas shopping.
Most major shops open with extreme promotional sales. They open extremely late the day or open extremely early in the morning. This is probably U.S's biggest shopping season.
Black Friday는 추수감사절 다음날 금요일의 특별한 날인데요. 크리스마스 쇼핑시즌이 시작되는 날이랍니다. 대부분의 상점들이 엄청난 세일을 하죠. 대신 엄청 늦은 저녁까지 열리거나, 이른 아침에 열리죠. 아마도 미국의 가장 큰 쇼핑날일 거에요.
The two pictures above are mostly what happen in crowded cities. People run through all the shops to get all the materials that are on sale. Some fight over with things, some people even die, crushed by the crowds.
위의 두 개의 사진들은 사람들이 북적거리는 도시에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 광경이죠. 사람들이 세일하는 물건들을 갖기 위해 몸싸움을 벌이고, 한정된 물건들을 서로 가지려 싸우고, 어떤 사람들은 압사하기도 한다고 해요

하지만!! 제가 사는 곳은 뉴욕같은 대도시에 비해 그리 큰 곳이 아니지만, 그래도 사람들이 많이 몰렸었고 상점마다 기다리는 줄이 길었어요.

Christmas!!
Right after thanksgiving, most of the families put up christmas tree. The Thompson family was one of them!
추수감사절이 끝나자마자 크리스마스 트리를 꺼내는 가정이 많은데, 제 가족도 그런 가족 중에 하나였어요!
Christmas is the national holiday. Christmas is celebrated in almost every country. But I can say Christmas is definately the most popular holiday in U.S.A. Christmas is the day of Jesus's birthday! So people sing gospels and worship songs. Besides any Christian songs, there are many Christmas songs. It is mostly what we hear in Korea. Every time we turn on the radio, Christmas songs start to come out even when it was a month left from Christmas!
Christmas is also the shopping season. My (host) dad told me if there weren't any Christmas shopping, 90% of shops in America will have finance crisis.
크리스마스는 세계적인 휴일이자 명절이죠. 크리스마스는 거의 모든 나라의 휴일이죠. 그래도 미국만큼 중요한 의미를 두는 나라는 없는 것 같아요. 크리스마스는 예수님 오신 날! 하며 서로서로 축하해요. 많은 사람들이 찬송가를 부르고 다녀요. 찬송가 외에도 많은 노래가 많은데, 크리스마스 한달 전부터 라디오를 키면 크리스마스 노래가 흘러나왔어요!
크리스마스는 미국의 가장 큰 쇼핑 시즌이에요. 호스트 아빠께서 그러시는데, 크리스마스 쇼핑이 없었다면 미국의 90% 상점들이 재정 위기를 겪을 거래요.
We woke up 6:00 am to open all gifts we got for each other.
여섯시에 일어나서 서로를 위해 준비한 선물들을 열어보는 시간을 가졌어요.

All the relatives (cousins, aunts, uncles...etc) came for Christmas!!

The day after Christmas, we went to my (host) mom's parent's house. And we all exchanged gifts also.
Grandpa was in the army and he went to Korea!! He knows all about Korean culture. He loves, loves, loves all our culture and food! 
One time, he just went straight to some Korean church and asked for Kimchi.

할아버지께서 미국 육군 부대에 계셨었는데, 한국에 계신 적이 있대요! 한국문화를 많이 아시더라고요
언제는 김치가 너무 드시고 싶어서, 미국의 한인교회에 불쑥 들어가셔서 김치를 요구하신 적도 있었다고 하네욬ㅋㅋ
