Hello, my name is Ye In Park. I am the 25th exchange student. I arrived Arizona in the mid January. Before I begin, I apologize for not being able to write in Korean. I tried all the ways and instructions but I still can’t do it. If you have any other solutions or advise, please leave a comment!
Where I live, Arizona, is in the desert area, so it is very dry and sunny. January here is like May in Korea! Nowadays, in the afternoon, you cannot but wear t-shirts and shorts. I found it so exotic at first when I saw a wide desert, cactus and palm trees everywhere.
The weekend I arrived here, I went to the ‘Trout Derby’ with my family. It is an annual event in our community. Many people were catching trout and having fun. My host dad and brother Jeffrey are involved in the boy scouts, so they were selling hotdogs and nachos for fund raising (In the USA, fund raiser is a very common thing among clubs and organizations.). The person who caught the biggest fish got to get a trophy-like a champion!

Now, let’s talk a little bit about my school. My school is called Millennium high school. http://www.aguafria.org/education/school/school.php?sectiondetailid=34& There are over 2000 students, so it is huge!! (Especially since I used to go to a school with about 300 students) We split lunch into 3 times-A, B, and C. Well, I have A lunch (the earliest one) which is at 10:45AM. I found this funny at first but now I’m used to it! Sometimes I pack lunch, but I’m not a big fan of this, so I usually buy at the cafeteria (also they’re more delicious J). There are subs, hot lunch, Chick-Fil-A, salad, snacks, pepperoni pizza and so on. In our school, each student get to choose 4 classes they want to take-it’s the same everyday and goes on for the whole semester. Though it is only 4, each one is about 90 minutes. There are many academic counselors that help choose the courses, which is very helpful! The break time is only 6 minutes, and we have to move to the next classroom. I still find this quite hard!
There are many clubs in American high schools. Millennium high has a lot of clubs such as all kinds of sport clubs, band, NHS, book club, music club, dance club, FBLA, FFA (Both my host brother and sister are in this club. They raise pigs in the school barn to grow and sell them in the county fair in April!), Scholastic bowl and so on. I am currently involved in the Key club, and Speech and debate club.
In addition, I am a member of the church youth club as well as Teen Action Council, which is a student volunteer club for the community and a part of the YMCA program. In TAC, all the students are respected, our opinions actually have power (students are not considered little!!), they are active, and do care for the community. This is one of things I really want to learn from Amercian students and wish that Korean society would be more like this way.

Litchfield Park Church-an awesome church:)
A couple of weeks ago, there was a special event at our school-the Spirit Week. Each day had a theme. For example Monday-Pajama day, Tues-Disney day, Wed-Celebrities day, Thurs-Starwars day, Fri-Frenzy day (school color clothes). On Wednesday, I dressed up like Beyonce, who is one of my favorite singers, but I didn’t exactly look like her J. The important thing is that I had fun!
My host sister Leah dressed up like Kim Kardashian:)
Saturday was the best out of the whole Spirit Week-we had the ‘Winter Formal’! It was like a dance party and everyone had to dress up very nicely. My host mom, sister Leah, and I went shopping that day for high heels (I can’t remember how many stores we went to buy the shoes that fit me since my shoe size was uneasy to find in this country!!). Apparently, I didn’t have a date (though Jeffrey did!), so I went over to my friend’s house and we went to the hotel together. The hotel was called ‘Renaissance hotel’ and was BEAUTIFUL and luxurious. I absolutely fell in love with that place. The ball room was bigger than I thought and had the dance floor in the middle. After a while, the girls who wore gorgeous high heels just put them away on the tables and danced on bare foot (including me). It was very different and fun. To say the truth, it was a bit of culture shock. I have never experienced something like this before and I wasn’t very comfortable with how they were dancing. In fact, the first thought that came to my mind was ‘When did those kids learn all these?’. I felt so little compared to the American teenagers. Well, I am going to give myself more time to adjust. I hope that by the time I go to the prom or home coming, I will feel more comfortable!

I really have so much more to tell you, but I think I have to leave here for now. The next time, I will try to tell you about more exciting and interesting events that happened. Please wait for me until then. See you everyone!
